Braai Flavours Gives Back: Charity Events 2019

Is it too late to say Happy New Year? We don’t think so – it’s still January…just about, so here we go: we hope your 2019 has got off to a great start! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for walking with us in 2018 and especially for your immense support at the December launch of our first cook book Braai Flavours – Taste the Adventure. We really wanted you to have that unique Braai Flavours experience at your fingertips and for those of you that have bought the book, please do tell us how the culinary adventure has been for you!

It’s going to be another exciting year for us –  watch this space for what we have in store for you in the upcoming months. But first things first. As you know our why is to inspire growth, change and charity through good food and drink and our values are rooted in giving back to both our customers and our community. With that in mind, we are delighted to announce our chosen charities for 2019-2020. With the turmoil and uncertainty both here in the UK and Zimbabwe, giving to those in need is probably now more important than ever. Through our activities and events, we will be supporting four charities, two in Zimbabwe and two in the UK. Here’s a little bit about the great work these organisations are doing and how with your help we will support them.

Empower a Girl Project

This is our new chosen charity for 2019-2020. It’s an initiative to empower and educate Zimbabwean girls around life and entrepreneurial skills to help build self-esteem. Throughout the year we will run a book, clothes and board games campaign, collecting donations at all our events. More details here:

The Magunje Children’s and Disabled Welfare Trust

We will continue to support this charity that’s based in Karoi, Zimbabwe. The Magunje Trust started in 2006 to primarily support orphans of the AIDS epidemic, starting with paying school fees and providing food parcels for a handful of children and families. Since then it has grown to a registered charity that also supports vulnerable adults and the disabled. The next step is to provide a centre where children at risk including those from surrounding villages can be educated and cared for and which provides vocational training for adults that can allow them to build income-generating projects. For more information go to:

  • Braai Flavours will trek the Brecon Beacons in Wales at Trekfest on Saturday 6th July 2019 to raise funds for the Magunje Trust.

Alzheimer’s Society

Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer with someone afflicted every 3 minutes. There is no cure nor are there any effective treatments. The Alzheimer’s Society is the largest and most influential dementia charity in the UK and the only one that campaigns for change, funds research to find a cure and supports people living with dementia.

National Autistic Society

The National Autistic Society was founded in 1962 and is the leading UK charity for autistic people and their families. This is a charity close to our hearts as Ken and Villima’s son also has autism. The family previously used their Autism East Midlands support network and attended the society’s local classes. Do you know that their son designed the back cover of the cook book?!

In fact, this is the 3rd run that Braai Flavours will take part in for the charity. The first was in 2013 when Ken ran with his brother Simba, and Villima ran in 2015.

We’re really honoured and excited to be working with these charities this year and we encourage you to take part too. The rewards are priceless!
